As a youngster in the 1960’s, I had the opportunity to study and tour professionally, mainly in the classical realm, both on the national and international stage. It was then, that I was seriously bitten by the creating and composing bug. And having worked in venues such as Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Philadelphia Academy of Music etc, it all seemed to provide just the right launching point for a what was later, a storied, winding career.
In the early 70’s, I found some work here and there as a session player on various projects, mainly guitar and keyboards, in genres from jazz to pop, and was finding studio life to be a natural second home. It was then, that I was somehow inspired to learn how to use the atmosphere of the recording studio as an instrument and composition tool. Later that decade, all the while recording, I returned to spending many long hours honing my craft as both a traditional composer and songwriter.
The payoff was the 1980’s, with my being contracted to do theatre scores for live shows in various parts of the USA. This gave me the mindset which I still use today, to see sound as scenes, and frequencies as characters. Its a rare day when I don’t create, whether for a client or just to fill my personal vaults. And just ask my wife or friends, ‘I just ain’t me’ when I am not writing. :)
